Ok there is MUCH MUCH debate about this and I want to know what needs adjusted & what needs to stay default
com_hunkmegs (put this to HALF of w/e your TOTAL RAM is default=56)
com_zonemegs (people say DOUBLE this or LEAVE it default = 24)
com_soundmegs (people say double,triple this default = 24)
cl_maxpackets (people say put this to 100 default =30)
snaps (people say put this to 40 default = 20
com_maxfps (say put to 76 because nake eye cant tell anymore than that, yet ET is default = 85, and I use 125... but I want to know what is best)
s_khz (stereo set to 44khz rather than default = 22)
Here are my specs:
Intel 2.66 P4 533MHZ FSB
1024MB DDR 333mhz RAM (gig)
ATI X800 Pro 256mb 12x Pipeline
18" LCD
40 & 160 Gig Seagates 7200RPMs
Sound Blast Audigy LS 24bit
Roadrunner (Time Warner) Cable ISP w/ Motorola Surfboard 4100.
Please help I'm adjusting these every time I load because I'm not ringing my normal stats - only hitting 40%+ w/ SMG
Please explain what these commands do -

Re: Settings
i play with it at 128, it's just the ammount of ram you're dedicating to running et...pro wrote:com_hunkmegs (put this to HALF of w/e your TOTAL RAM is default=56)
i say put it at 32com_zonemegs (people say DOUBLE this or LEAVE it default = 24)
i set this at 32 aswellcom_soundmegs (people say double,triple this default = 24)
make this = to your fpscl_maxpackets (people say put this to 100 default =30)
makes no difference, you request 40 snaps you'll get 20 snaps... but 2 of each, you request 80 snaps you'll get 20 snaps but 4 of each, etcsnaps (people say put this to 40 default = 20
76 is NOT because eye can't see the difference... trick jumps peak on normal et at "magic" fps... 76 is one of them, there's one in the 90's and the best peak is at 333, putting this at 76 is usually best if you're computer can't MAINTAIN higher... if you see large fps drops it'll effect you worse then lowering your fps downcom_maxfps (say put to 76 because nake eye cant tell anymore than that, yet ET is default = 85, and I use 125... but I want to know what is best)
i've never changed this...s_khz (stereo set to 44khz rather than default = 22)

Taken straight outta my config. I don't have the best technical knowledge of the q3 engine (alot of people here can put me to shame) but I'd say I have a fair understanding - through trial and error and some asking around over the last 3 years I've settled on these settings. Of course people with different hardware and preferences will be slightly different.

com_maxfps "90" (To match monitor refresh rate, and with the new "fixed physics" no worries about 43/76/125 stuff. Before fixed physics I used a bind like this:
seta jumpag1 "com_maxfps 76; +moveup"
seta jumpag2 "-moveup; com_maxfps 90"
bind space "+vstr jumpag1 jumpag2"
Because I had my monitor resolution and refresh how I wanted and it looked like ass with com_maxfps 76 or 125. If anyone tells you about the human eye can only blah blah 25-30fps or so just pee on their shoes and walk away since there is no motion blur in video games like there is when watching film.
