As a spectator following player1, it will automatically switch to player2 while player1 is in limbo. It switches back to player1 when player1 spawns again.
The bug: When the match is speclocked, and you are specinvited. If the entire team is in limbo, then it won't automatically switch back to player1, but stay black. (I can't remember if this has been reported or not).
The feature request: when specinvited, spectators would be granted partial shoutcaster features for the team they are specinvited to.
That is: On the command map/compass, you would be able to see players, (maybe names of players), objectives and team mines/spotted opponent mines.
You would also hear the announcer, and see mines like the players do.

Our league Gamearena, in Australia, allows teams to have 1 spec per side. We call it a coach.

Asked before for these features for coaching, they'd include what your after and much more.
At this point I dont think it'd be too hard to make coach functionality since it'd be largely based of the shoutcaster status.
