Rifle blurb

Post by Fred »

Alright, I have time to kill so I might as well post something here.

The garrand and k43 rifle are decent weapons for the covert and engineer class and the long needed change to even allies and axis rifles has already been made.

Yet the main draw back of the rifle (unless you have godlike sniping skills or rifle nade calculations) is its lack of long range firepower. Realistically the rifle is the long range weapon of choice and the SMG is the shortrange weapon of choice. Currently in ET the SMG is the long range weapon of choice and the rifle is useful only as a short range hand to hand weapon, or as a long range piece of mobile artilary (and only then when you have the element of surprise).

This problem stems from the base X% decrease of accuracy prolonged fire has when crouched or prone. While standing and moving the SMG clearly has a greater loss of accuracy than the rifle, but that difference is lost because the SMG has 3 times the ammo per clip and thus a greater chance of hitting the target when firing till empty. While crouching the accuracy of the SMG is actually very close to the rifle because the % of decrease is greater due to the starting loss of accuracy while shooting from the hip. Again, shooting 30 shots at a decent decent accuracy and damage is better at long range than firing off 10 rounds at a decent accuracy and superior damage. While prone the SMG becomes obscenely accurate and is probably the best choice for a long range light weapon. This problem is made worse when LW3 is obtained and the added % decrease of accuracy loss makes the SMG almost sniper accurate.

Suggestion:

DECREASE the base accuracy of SMGs by a factor of 25% and increase the recovery by the same amount. This would make them a primarily short range weapon while keeping the same rate of accuracy loss while on full auto and damge specs. It would also encourage short bursts as opposed to full auto for better results.

DECREASE the rate of fire of the rifle to maybe 1 shot per second. This kills the rifle as a short range weapon which it should never be.

INCREASE the damage of the rifle from its current level to 60 damage per hit and (90)/110 for a head shot. Rifle rounds are significantly larger than SMG rounds and should do damage accordingly. (Scoped rifles increase damage by 25 for hit and head to 85/(115)135 with the same 1 shot/sec limitation and greater recoil).

INCREASE the accuracy and decrease the rate of recovery of the rifle. The first shot standing should have a slim chance of missing, crouching very very little chance of missing, and prone should have no chance of missing. This inaccuracy would affect shots long range as the distance becomes greater and the target smaller so it would not take away from snipers. If you fire immeadiately after the first shot your aim would not be as good if you had paused a moment longer to aim and the recovery rate should reflect that.

GIVE the option to take a rifle to medics and field ops, but without the scope or grenade launcher secondary. This gives players a wider choice of weapons to suit if they are an up front charging person (SMG for close range) or perfer to take cover and fire long range (Rifle for long).

GIVE the option to take a rifle AND a SMG to soldiers as a primary weapon and secondary weapon or a rifle/SMG as a secondary with a heavy weapon once HW4 is reached. Also, add a bayonet secondary fire to the rifle that has the range of a knife stab and automatically counts as a backstab in terms of damage when someone is hit with it. Secondary fire could 'fix bayonet' and change the primary action to a stab (no shooting with a bayonet attached) and could possibly use the same animation as an engineer loading a rifle nade. Make the rate of fire pretty slow (same as firing the rifle on default) so that you won't get soldiers just running around with bayonets stabbing people. If they miss their first lunge, they deserve to get drilled in the head in retaliation.

Just a few ideas off the top of my head to hold back utter boredom.
