If i have a processor with a 266 fsb can it run with the ddr 400 or must it use ddr 266. My Mobo is compatible with both ram speeds

Afaik all new RAM can be used on older MB's (if it can use that type of RAM), but the newer MB's must have the higher speed RAM to work.

you misunderstood me, i am gettin an old thoroughbred ( ya my spellin sucks) and it has a 266 mhz fsb, does that mean i can run ddr 400 or must i get a 400 mhz fsb processor. and if it will work will the ram operate at full speed with the slower fsb

The 400 will work but it will only run at 266.

if you get faster ram than the motherboard or processor's FSB, the ram will only run at the speed of the processor
if you get slower ram than the motherboard or processor's FSB, the ram will only run at the speed of the ram
either way it's the slower speed you will use

From what I've read, there are some desktop systems that won't even run with the slower ram. And most Laptops. I know my laptop won't even boot-up if I put a slower ram chip in it. :!:
As for the CPU, I'm not sure if they work the same.

i haven't run into any, not saying there aren't any but most of the upper quality boards should beable to take any kind of ddr you put into them... but why get 266Mhz when 400 is allmost as cheap?

the amd athlon 2000+ is at 266 mhz fsb and its only $57 thats why im buying it. I am getting ddr 400 ram, my mobo is the biostar m7ncd (i think thas what its called) All i wanna know is if the they will be compatible with both in there at the same time, I want ddr 400 because i plan on eventually gettin a faster cpu with a 400 mhz.

Another question, does the retail amd athlon processors come with thermal grease.

Thanks for all the help i will be having alot of questions so be prepared because this is my first computer that ive built for myself

The ddr 400 will under clock it's self and not run full speed. No the cpu does not come with a thermal grese package. But under the heat sink it has some thermal stuff.

also note, adding things to it voids amd's warranty, just use stock cooling stuff, then you won't have to explain anything to them (unless your sure you can handle the processor yourself)

Ive always thought thermal grease was a must!
I just hope the processor isnt DOA, AMD is notorius for that!

Just some clarification to the FSB speed issue above: Your PC will run at the lowest FSB you have. So if you have a mobo with FSB of 400 but memory of 333, the PC will only run at 333.
Also, as long as the memory you use is proper for the memory socket, it will work (unless it's damaged).
