CPU usage

Post by z1g »

Forgive me if this is repetitive, I did a quick forum search and did not see anything related posted recently.

I am wondering if some of you fellow server, admins windows, linux, and BSD could post some cpu usage and player counts of your servers and perhaps that particular servers specs.

The reason I am interested is I recently setup a windows server, I have always used linux in the past. I noticed a etpro port with 14 players on it on my windows server was using 2-6% CPU whereas the Linux ports uses 18-25% cpu for the same amount of players, same match configs.

I am curious to see what other people are getting.

Thanks

I run both a Linux and a Windows ETPro server and on average, I would say it runs at <2% on both. Even with 20+ players
{Zer0}'s House of Torment 67.19.67.118:27960
{Zer0}'s RTCW server 67.19.67.119:27960

What CPU is that? We have 35% load on our Athlon XP when running 2 20slot servers. Distro is Suse 8.1
Our servers now run on 64 bit steroids. Point your ET to:
- Forgotten Ground StopWatch Server with occasional wolfrof 1
- Fraggle Rock ETPub Server - Mix up ET/UT & Duke Nukem

Yes, me too.

On Suse 8.1 and 9.0. But i doubt its the distro.
I know someone, who has the same rootserver as me and always says he only has something about 6% cpu usage even with 40 people on. I really doubt that.

Or is there a cvar to make the etpro server optimize cpu usage ? :D

model name : AMD Athlon(tm) prosussor
stepping : 0
cpu MHz : 1999.733
cache size : 256 KB

00:00:24 up 14 days, 3:38, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
29 processes: 28 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states: 2.7% user, 0.0% system, 0.0% nice, 97.3% idle

When there is major action on the server it goes up to 5, shortly peak maybe 8 percent -- never monitored it closely since it never made any problems.

The Linux server is

Code: Select all

P4 - 2.0Ghz - Redhat 9 - 80GB HDD- 1 GB RAM
The windows server is

Code: Select all

Dual Xeon 2.8 GHz HDD#1: 73 GB SCSI: HDD: 73 GB SCSI: RAM: ECC Registered 2048 MB RAM : OS: Windows Server 2003, Standard:

:O. Wonder what I'm doing wrong then? We have an Athlon XP 3000+ with 1 GB of RAM and every daemon (we run 4 instances of etded.x86) uses at least 2.5% when idle. Any Linux gurus here that care to comment?

There's the CPU issue in this thread
http://bani.anime.net/banimod/forums/vi ... php?t=2024

Doesn't really sound like your problem, but it might be some similar configuration issue.

No,

i don't think thats our problem. I don't have 90% cpu usage. I (and looks like some others) don't really have a problem. It only looks like the cpu usage seems to be just different on some machines.

my current server:

Code: Select all

model name : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+
stepping : 0
cpu MHz : 1931.990
cache size : 512 KB
and i have about 20-30% with 20 people on the et-server (i only have one running).

atm:

Code: Select all

23:56:32 up 47 days, 22:02, 1 user, load average: 1.09, 1.13, 1.10
Cpu(s): 25.7% user, 3.0% system, 0.0% nice, 71.2% idle
with 12 people on.

What kernel are you guys running. I use 2.4.21-231-athlon #1 (its the default suse athlon kernel from SuSE 9.0).

Nevertheless, i try the proposed fix from the thread tomorrow.
Edit: Just tried with a second et-server. Already 2%, when idle...

greets
Mark

We have 2.6.5-7.104. But we doubt it's the reason. We did optimized compiles on gentoo boxes too and it didn't decrease the cpu usage of the daemon...

Im the second admin from <R0F> Servers....

According to deej:

We also used kernel 2.4 earlier and that didnt change anything.

Is 20 % CPU Usage normal for an et server with 20 peeps on it @ the hardware deej told already ??

Thx for help & the infos ;-)

Server: P4 2.8ghz / 1gb Ram - Running Redhat 9

CPU load on a full 18 player ETPro server runs at about 7-10%, and uses about 140mb ram.
