I was just getting back at him for his slanderous Probe comment. I honestly think they might be collector's cars some day. Cute, quaint, basic, but fun. Top of the line technology in their day, but now there are naturally aspirated four cylinders that can outrun them.bani wrote:"lotus elise"mortis wrote:He does unholy things like putting Japanese engines into British cars!
...unholy?
was driving next to one today, in fact.
slower, heavier, and $10k more expensiveRagnar_40k wrote:They say "More sport than wagon": http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/3/325xisportswagon
also less reliable (#65) than the impreza (#28 )
hardly. the M3 is way more road penis than a GTI.Deus wrote:Why GTI then? Its as much a raod penis as the M3, except its cheaper, and all the nerds own one (at least in germany).bani wrote:i'm shopping for a practical daily driver, not a road penis
the M3 is a $50k luxury performance sedan. 3.2L I6, 333hp, 0-60 in 4.8sec. on the streets you can take on everything short of a lotus elise. you will easily smoke unmodded STIs and EVOs.
take this grocery shopping and it will get keyed for sure.
the GTI is a $22k economy hot hatch. 2.0L I4, 200hp, 0-60 in 6.0sec. on the streets about the hottest car you can take on is a honda civic or toyota corolla.
take this grocery shopping and nobody will care.
I dont understand where all the hate for bmws come from in the US, in the UK it's just another reasonably nice make of car... o.0

and the yaris somehow doesnt fit in...
I know. How about the good old Prius then ? But seriously, get a VW Golf GTI with DSG box. Or if you have money to spare, take the R32. You won't regret it.bani wrote:if you look at the cars i've been test driving you might notice a pattern.

Don't underestimate the weaker dollar vs euro in that aspect. In 2 years time the € has become a lot stronger against the $. I'm pretty sure VW has to bring parts from Europe somehow (even if assembled in the US) which weigh on the price.bani wrote:What is funny is the R32 is one of the few cars i've found that actually appreciates in value over time.
the downside means that the R32 that MSRP'd for $29k new in 2004 is now selling in 2006 with 20,000 miles on it for $31k.
In a direct comparison, the R32 easily floors the BMW 130i, even with its bigger penis attitude .

I would jump all over the GTI, but VW's legendary unreliability and horrible warranty support are two major issues. Having a first-rate interior and excellent handling hardly offset the pain of being in the shop all the time.
Maybe with the MKV GTI VW has finally addressed their reliability problems, but it's too early to tell.

My uncle's GTI has 45000 km already and he hasn't had any issues yet...
