netlag issues in 3.0.x

This thread is to determine the cause of netlag issues in 3.0.x.

If you have problems with netlag in 3.0.x but not 2.0.7 then this thread is for you.

If you have netlag problems please determine if server has set b_antiwarp 0 or 1. post screenshots of your lagometer when having problems, and report your OS and network connection type/speed.

this is not a thread for FPS drops, there is a separate thread for that.. this thread is for netlag only.

The green, and smaller ones, are taken when I'm far away from where the action is ...
The yellow big timeouts in the lagometer are mostly from infights, or where the fighting takes place.

Server Info:
- et pro version 3.0.1 bugfix 2
- b_antiwarp 1
----------------------------------------------
this just happens on et pro 3 and greater versions

Client Info:
- Windows XP SP1 with all new patches
- Connection: ISDN 64k [cl_maxpackets 30, rate 7000, snaps 40, cl_packetdup 1]

I have just tested with b_antiwarp 0 at the same server, but we were just 2 persons, so the test isnt really compareable to the upper screenshots, but here are my results:

When there are so few people on the server, the lags are really small, and when b_antiwarp was set to 0, I didnt really recognize that I had that small lags, but I'm gonna test this in 6on6!

your connection (isdn 64k) is on the lowest end of being barely usable for ET.

try a lower cl_maxpackets and/or snaps. cl_packetdup 0 would be good to try also.

basically your connection is just a little too slow, and the antiwarp is activating in order to prevent you from warping around to other players.

I'm gonna try to set cl_packetdup to 0, but I dont think that will help ...
I cant lower the rate, cause most of the league configs force me to use 7000, and same with maxpackets, it's forced to 30.

I know that my connection brakes down on heavy action, my ping rises to >150 ... but thats not the problem for me, I'm used to that.

The only thing what I'm not understanding ... when I'm alone on the server, my connection is superb, ping 51, lagometer just green, no hills, but the really small lags are still present, even when I'm alone on the server, and my bandwidth usage is never 100% like when I'm playing 6on6.

The usual netgraph when I'm playing 6on6 is just yellow, and ping is at about 150, but as I said thats no problem, ... but there are this small lags when I'm alone on the server, which grow really high, when there are a lot of players on the server.

The data rate from the server to the client is not a constant. The more players there are on the server, the more data the server has to send to you. If more "stuff" happens in the game (people walking around, shooting, things exploding), the data rate increases.

That's why you'll see the snapshot graph turn yellow at some point on a busy server. The data rate has reached the maximum rate set by your client and the server starts delaying or dropping updates to you.

About those small hitches on your graph: do you see the screen freeze for an instant when that happens (a.k.a. a micropause)? If so, then you have to look for the cause on your PC somewhere. Anything that interrupts the ET process for a short period of time could cause a micropause. Things to look for: bad drivers, bad hardware, wrong settings, too much overclocking and general instability.

yep I knew that, but here comes my question ... WHEN I'm alone there, my connection is good (no other things the server sends me, no other players, noone shoots, etc...) BUT the lags are still present

I'm testing everything now, with another ISDN guy on our server, ... changing b_antiwarp again, changing our snaps, cl_packetdup etc...

I'll post my results here immidiatly

That was one of the first things I checked out.

I tested my same config on 2.0.7 server (same server where now our 3.0.1 runs) and I had no! lag at all, just was unsmoother to play, but I didnt had this lags.

Next thing I checked was for a virus, a worm, or a trojan ... couldn find anything. Then I checked my pc for spyware etc... everything is/was clean.
Next thing was ... playing on an et main server, and no lag there.
So I think it's not the clients fault, ... I play other games too, and there I dont have any lags at all, rtcw or q3 for example.

edit:

I've tested on et pro 3.0.1 bugfix2 and punkbuster disabled ... and :shock: I didnt have this small time outs o_O
after 20 minutes of testing, and not anyyyyy lag ... I did a rcon pb_sv_enable ... after about 1 minute a got a small lag, and console said this:

It's really hard to test with more players, when Punkbuster is disabled u know? :(

It's hard to explain but it feels like I'm experiencing unusual lag too. When bugfix 1 was released I was really happy because the antilag system worked really well. Now, playing on bugfix 3 servers things seem to have gotten worse than 2.0.7 :(. The problems I had so far:

Fluctuation ping with differences up to 30 ms. Tried to tweak this with snaps, maxpackets and rate but it didn't solve the problem. On non bugfix 3 servers the connection is stable.

100% sure hit misses. In bugfix 1, when I knew I was hitting someone, I also hit that person. Now, I can have my cursor exactly at the body of the opponent(or the head, which seems to give body shots too), and still miss. Headshots in these conditions are random. Tried turning antilag off, but it felt no different from being on. That means there is really something wrong(normally antilag adds about 6% to my accuracy). Turning it off and on again(cg_predictitems bug check) didn't work either.

Sudden deaths. Without any visual reason(bullets hitting me, resulting in a backblast), and no dying animation, I am suddenly on the ground waiting for a medic. It looks like the old et beta demo, where players who get shot down instantly warp to the 'awaiting medic' position.

I've heard a lot of people complainting about lag they are experiencing. The netcode didn't change(as Bani said before), but there must be some reason for these strange events.

nothing changed in code here from test1 - test3. try turning off punkbuster?

this means something is very wrong with your connection and/or setup.

I know where to hit the hitboxes. It's also almost impossable to miss the body when actually aiming at it. Nevertheless, I miss unmissable shots.

Pb off servers do give me a stable ping. That's one problem "solved".

Those sudden deaths seem to be related with the fps drops I'm experiencing. Also, a high ping seems to be a guarantee for low fps. I have the feeling it's a combination of these factors that make antilag feel useless. Tried again today, on and off made no significant difference. If you have both problems, stuff gets real choppy.

I think my small lag problem is caused by Punkbuster ... After that antiwarp trys to prevent me from warping, so that no other guys on the server will see that I have a lag, thats why I got this timeout ...

I still have this PB lag when antiwarp is 0 ... but it's really small compared to the lag when antiwarp is set to 1

PS: I just have this PB lag since et pro 3 ... very strange ... :(

defragga: You might want to read the PB FAQ and look at the part about the pb_system setting. That might help.

thx lekdevil ... I tried all that stuff which was listed on the pb faq, but nothing helped me :/

I also tried to manually update pb again, and to check our pb server config ... but nothing helped me :/ Now I'm gonna try to disable pb again, and recheck if it's really punkbuster.

edit:

its definitiv <b>not</b> Punkbuster ... I was alone on the server for about 10 minutes and I recognized this <img src="http://kaily.lexxa.at/pics/lag11.png"> again ... and Punkbuster was 100% disabled ... sorry for the wrong infos about that pb causes this lag :( it isnt pb ... thats sure now.

FWIW: that graph behaviour is exactly what I'm getting as well every now and then on my server (ETPro 3.0.1, b_antiwarp 1, sv_maxrate 13000, client rate 25000, PB enabled, 2 Mbps client connection, no congestion).
