Sound muted permanently

Post by kingbolt »

.... ....
Hardware: Motherboard Abit IS7 http://www.intelforums.net/viewtopic.php?t=246
Processor : P4 2.8GHz Northwood
Memory : 1Gb DDR400
3D-card : ATI 9600 PRO
Mouse : Logitech MX700

And playing PRO updated to recent update.

After about 5 minutes the sound is muted. I tried s_stop and other s_commands but no effect. I reconnected...no effect. I quit and tested if the IS7 integrated soundchip was crashed...it wasn't.
The other interesting thing in this "muted sound" is that the speed of the game "increases" for me...I can hit better too and move very "smoothly".
At the map where allies have to blow the guns (run from water up to hill and take the bunker too) I get some graphics errors too when sound is muted. If I reconnect as sound muted and the map is what I wrote, there is water at the left side of the start screen (and there should be the "banner" only...).
Then I used /players-command and saw that when the sound was ok, all the players had [CLEAN blablabla] but when the sound got muted the /players-command gave [???????? blablabla] for me.
I have console dump of that situation if that helps.
Has anyone else had this mute-problem ?

Oh...when I reconnect sound muted, the sound is still off. When I go back after QUIT, the sound works again....for some minutes. Has this somethin to do with sound buffer size or ?

(heh...and only few days ago...on the other topic...and so on... )

You would be far better of to get a decent soundcard, the integrated soundchip wastes a good amount of CPU power and isn't really good when it comes to sound quality. I would suggest a Terratec Aureon 5.1 Sky, it's a solid peace of work and not to expensive (I'll gonna get one in a few days, my sb-live did cost me enough of my nerves). Stay away from Creative, their support is ugly and the cards are too expensive for what they offer.

...I know that. I used to have soundcards earlier because I make music using synths etc. and used to drive them with soundcards midiport. And I know that Creative's cards are crap..I've tested and owned every card-type they have made exept the newest two.
The last card I gave away was SB LIVE! Platinum. But the thing is that there are no "recommended" sound card for THIS game nor any "warnings" saying integrated sound chips do not work with ET. So I would like to find out the reason that jamms the sound. So far no luck.

And YES...I am going to buy the card and your suggestion is ok (really good working basic card) but I will take this one:
Terratec SoundSystem DMX 6fire 24/9
because I need that card for "other purposes" too

hmm...worth checking...I have seen some strange binds in my config since I used seismovison...

Well...I checked those bindings...everything ok. So it was not that

Yesterday I played about 2 hours at PRO-server that had not the recent update. All worked fine. No problemo. Then I tried to play on our server that has the newest PRO-update...one map (2-3 minutes) and the sound was gone
Before the sound is muted, there is a symptom to that. First a short lag-spike then the sound gets chopped for a short period. From that after a short time the sound is muted permanently. There were some other plrs too that had the same problem.

Oh and one thing more...sometimes...very seldom, the sound comes back after one minute or 5 minutes...or not at all. And I have tested the sound with some other games (RTCW, MANHUNT etc.)...no errors or problems.

Are there parameters at server setup that could make that happen ?
I have my sound parameters as they come from ET as default.

I found this one for Linux:
I now have delayed sound, which some people were able to fix by turning off/on the Full Duplex function in the Sound System manager of KDE
Has it something to do with that DUPLEX-setting ?

That was from yesterdays game..I managed to play over 1 minute (wow..) without the soundcrash. Then *plim...muted. I played as No24. As you can see (and what I have talked with some players) it's not only me. Yesterday I asked from the players that had [????? WIN32] message : "Do you have sound muted ?". They all (not only on that game) said : "YES...my sound is muted..". It was not so with the older ET-PRO code. Why now ?

WHAT IS THAT [UNKNOWN][UNKNOWN].....server admin ?

P.S: That guid-code....something to do with NIC...(or very similar)..

...must be so that players from other countries does not get any muted sound errors...but in Finland we DO. Very annoying character in Pro...
And how I'm sure it's Pro ? Because I have played main, older pro-versions and the newest pro for about one week now (several hours..) and the only version where this problem comes is newest PRO...
The soundchip on my mobo is THE MOST LOW-END that I've used but that does not explain why PRO is muted.
The chip (and my PC in general) works 100% in other games (GC II is the newest what I have tested..).

btw ... I got a P4 3GHz, and I have sound on board, ... does anyone know how much cpu I would save when I'd use my "old" SB Live ? :D

...never "measured" how much integrated devices grab resources...but whatever it takes I am happy to get over 150 fps in game (sounds ON) and little over (muted). But generally it SHOULD be so that if something is INTEGRATED to something, it should work BETTER that add-on components. And in fact they DO work more reliably. Otherway there would be no idea of integrate those.

btw...if you put your OLD SB and use that you are deffinitely NOT going to SAVE CPU-time...
So called sound cards that Creative made had that EMU-chip (might still have) that caused ALOT OF TROUBLE when even trying to install those bloody cards.
It was card-dependent if you got so called "good SB". But if you put a REAL sound card in your hardware, then you can say that it is saving processor time for other purposes.

Ok...now I know what causes that soundmute.....summer, yes summer. In fact it's the extra-heat that fine summer sunshine causes  . It's simply so, that for some reason the mobo gets more stressed when playing on day 1 and less stressed on day two....so it is deffinitely hardware problem
