Lag spikes

Post by PhredBean »

I keep getting lag spikes, about one every two minutes. They pass quickly, lasting only about 2-5 seconds. My ping is normally about 65, but jumps to the 400's when spiking. I have tried reinstalling the game to no effect. I get them regardless of patch or mod, though not on any game but ET. I also get them regardless of what is running in the background; closing programs, firewalls, anti-viruses, and such doesn't help. If anyone has experienced this, knows how to fix it, or has any speculation as to the problem and how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it.

My computer:
AMD Athelon XP 3200+ 400 FSB
ASUS 400 FSB motherboard
1 GB Kingston PC333 Ram
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
Soundblaster Audigy
Windows XP Pro
Cable internet (Cox Communications)

sounds like punkbuster autoscreenshot facility. Depends on server then.

Does it happen on every server or just some servers ?

Thanks. I'll have to talk to our server guy and check that out.

Defragga, that is an extremely distracting avatar, not that that's a bad thing though.

That didn't help, the spikes are still there and just as frequent. After further testing I've found that the lag spikes occure on all servers, but are worse on others.

I'm fairly sure it's not my internet connection, because this is the only game I have this problem on. It's also not my video card or anything else I can think of in my computer, because I have tryed various things to lessen the resourses it uses from my vidio card, sound card, processor, and ram, all are fully capable of handling the game. Turning off firewalls, virus scanners, and other programs doesn't help either.

While it no doubt varies by region, I know a number of my clanmates have had horrible experiences with Cox. Have you played other games long enough to be completely sure it doesn't happen with them as well ?

Can you post a screenshot of what the lagometer looks like when it spikes ?

We had some people complaining about lag on our servers. One reinstalled and the problem vanished. Some others did the same, and their problem disappeared too. Maybe just wrong network settings (is my guess)?

I get this exact same problem. My hunk megs is set to 256 and my Proccessor is a P4 3.0 Ghz. I'm convinced this is NOT my internet OR PBSS due to the fact my old PC (which had worse specs) did NOT have this problem. I'll try re-install. If this doesn't help I'm at a loss of what to do, this has cos my clan about 2 games as I'm an engy and it slows my run to Dyno etc.

I should also mention i now use a wireless LAN. This MAY be it. Its only 5m from the router though.

I suggest you test the stability of your wireless connection. Find the hop after it using tracert (it whould be in the first 1 or 2), and then ping it with
ping -n 100 -l 1000 www.xxx.yyy.zzz

-n 100 means send 100 packets, for a reasonable sample size. -l 1000 means use 1000 byte packets. These are more likely to show up problems compared to small ones. You shouldn't do anything else on your connection while you are doing this.

If there is packet loss, or large variation in ping times, then your wireless connection is not behaving correctly. If the wireless checks out OK, you can move to the next hop. Note that all connections do drop packets from time to time, but 1 in 100 would be excessive. Some ping variation is to be expected as well.

k. i dunno what the tracert thing is tbh. :|

I was thinking about what was said about re-installing. I deleted it and re-installed (didn't re-download though) and i continvued to get the problem. Now I'm thinking it may be something in my autoconfig as the people who re-installed would have their configs reset from scratch while i have not done this. I use this config

tracert www.google.com will give you something like this (ips have been changed to protect the innocent):

Code: Select all

Tracing route to www.google.akadns.net [216.239.57.103]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 1.2.3.4
  2 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 5.6.7.8
  3 20 ms 30 ms 30 ms 9.10.11.12
  4 20 ms 30 ms 30 ms 13.14.15.16
..
Where the ping times go from <10 to 20-30 ms is where my connection goes over my DSL line. So 5.6.7.8 is inside my house, and 9.10.11.12 is at my local CO. So if I want to test my inside connection with the ping command describe above, I'd use 5.6.7.8. If I wanted to test the outside, I would use 9.10.11.12.

Remember that the ping will show you packets lost anywhere along the route, so you should test from the nearest hop outward.
