Shoutout to the ETPro crew for making it possible for all of us to watch the awesome games that went down. I stayed up till 5:30am Friday night (in Australia) then got back up at 11 and watched for the next 5-6 hours, god knows I wouldn't have bothered if I was just going to listen to a shoutcast.

What actually happened was this: on Thursday and Friday we were running ETTV beta3 on both the game servers and the external hubs and slaves. This provided us with fairly reliable broadcast system. However, the playback was very jittery to the ETTV viewers, because of the bug in beta3.

So, when beta5 was released on Saturday, I upgraded the hubs and slaves (but not the masters) to that version. This solved the jitters, but introduced the problem that hub playback was proceeding at a faster rate than hub recording, resulting in a buffer underrun on the hub after about 30 minutes (and thus catastrophic failure of the entire broadcast system). Because the Saturday morning match was already in progress when I noticed this, the only options at this point was to restart the hubs and slaves, so that no buffer underrun and broadcast interruption would occur during the match rounds themselves.

Note that the rate problem caused the shoutcast delay to decrease all the time, something that iTG listeners had to compensate for by resynchronizing repeatedly.

Hoping that upgrading the master (game) server to beta5 would solve the playback/recording rate mismatch, I actually upgraded the master to beta5 shortly before the final. This turned out to be a bit of a disaster, as all the players immediately noticed bad latency lag when connected to the server. So, with 15 minutes to go before match start, I reverted to beta3, fortunately quickly enough so we were still able to start the match on time.

And yes, ETTV viewers had to reconnect a couple of time during all this.

So, the options I had were:
  1. Beta3 on master and beta 3 on hubs/slaves: jittery ETTV playback.
  2. Beta3 on master and beta 5 on hubs/slaves: buffer underruns and repeated restarts
  3. Beta 5 on master, hubs and slaves: unplayable for the competitors
Pick your poison...

In the end we had option 1 in effect on Thursday and Friday, and option 2 on Saturday. We did get all the broadcasts out and they were (with the exception of the period on Friday where we had some nasty core problems) of acceptable quality (at least, that's what the feedback seems to be suggesting).

Oh, and we had 1150 viewers on the SpeakEasy servers during the finals, plus an unknown (to me) number on the European "leachers". :) Not great, but decent numbers, IMHO.

Our local competition has been fighting unsuccessfully to get ETTV working for the last 4 weeks now as we've progressed through our finals series, and they haven't even managed to get jittery playback, let alone anything else, so I have to say I was impressed with how well things went, it was bad on Friday night but we still stuck it out because even if it was laggy, we were still getting to see great matches half a world away we never would have otherwise. So shoutout to Lekdevil and everyone who helped him make ET at QuakeCon 2005 the success it was in so many eyes.
