not true again. the downlink is usually in the us. it may count as 2 hops and since your transmission travels at the speed of light i dont think it will be an issue.

if you use the satelite connection, your connection is fast, however the ping will be enormous because your signal has to hit the modem and get sent to geosyncrinous(spelling) orbit wich is about five times the radious of earth up, and then come back down adding a couple seconds of ping time to your results

geosynchronous orbit - 35,785 km
speed of light - 299,792.458 km/sec
geosynchronous roundtrip - 0.119366093825 sec * 2 = ~239ms

lunar orbit - 384,405 km
lunar roundtrip - 1.282239019053 * 2 = ~2.565 sec

bani if it was in lunar orbit it would only work partially. think; it would have to travel to the dark side every orbit unless it was geostationary and in lunar orbit on the non-darkside.

Remeber, Pitch, Yaw, And Roll. Space is 3D believe it or not. So a satellite beyond the moon could always have a line of site. It'd have to go a lot faster than the earth to be line of site, sort of like a harddisk platter. Think about it. Or if you can't think, do something usefull and lay down fibre optics for every house with RTCW in it.

A satellite link doesn't have the apparent delay that it should according to the speed of light alone. There are additional delays inherent in the repeating processes. You also have to consider the delays added by the electronics at each end of the signal (ground and space).

To see an example, simultaneously tune into live broadcasts of a news conference or a news event on different channels and observe the delays between various channels.

Unless something else has come out I thought Satellite internet only allows for high speed download, still have to use a dial up connection for upload right? (you would need a dish that could transmit as well as recieve otherwise)

If this is the case seems like might not be that much faster for the money for gaming. (now downloading porn....that's another story )

the appearent delay u see can be explained by the normal delay some broadcasters put in thier signal. for example radio is delayed up to 15 seconds to hit the bleep button. tv also has some of the same items. now the difference between rabbit ears and cable is that cable has to travel thru cable line and switching points and thru a sat downlink. rabbit ears pick up the signal from a transmitter on a mtn or a tall bldg.

u have a good point however the satalite uplink and downlink should be as quick if not quicker then rabbit ear (bani) style reception. the sat uses line of site. rabitears can pickup gosting and rebounds off other strutures. and the uplink is sat not a modem now.
