Best Linux distro for etded / ettv?

Post by deej »

Just wanted to ask you Linux guru's a question: which Linux distro is best suited for etded / ettv? I'm currently running Fedora Core 5 but I'm curious whether switching to something else would improve performance for etded & ettv?

Currently thinking about Debian. Don't know if FreeBSD would be an option? I don't like Gentoo since I have to compile it all myself :(.
Our servers now run on 64 bit steroids. Point your ET to:
- Forgotten Ground StopWatch Server with occasional wolfrof 1
- Fraggle Rock ETPub Server - Mix up ET/UT & Duke Nukem

It runs great on freeBSD, as I used to administer a freeBSD ET server, although I didn't configure it personally. It was rock solid though. You can talk to Primer at vi@sh.nu or on IRC #et.bsd on gamesurge IIRC, he knows more than the average bear about freeBSD and ET.

Anything without a GUI installed should work fine. If you get Ubuntu or Debian, updating is easy, too. The only real difference is if you recompile your kernel and other basic programs to take advantage of features in the processor, which currently only Gentoo does anything besides the kernel. Even then, for an ET server, the gain is most likely negligiable.

I believe b13 ignores the unsupported feature. (throttling when clients get disconnected but don't send disconnect messages)
If it still doesn't, then it needs to be fixed :/

Debian. Take the minimum/net install and put only progs on the server you need.
