poor FPS issues in 3.0.x
This thread is to determine the cause of fps issues in 3.0.x
If you have problems with poor fps in 3.0.x but not 2.0.7 then this thread is for you.
please report your FPS in 2.0.7 and in 3.0.1, and the OS you are using.
this is not a thread for netlag, there is a separate thread for that. this thread is for FPS drops only.

It's hard to say exactly, because the fps drop isn't consistent ( and neither are fps )
. Plus I'm only getting the issue when online, timedemo's show no difference. The closest I could get would be to note that in 2.0.7 I get a pretty solid 76 fps, while in 3.0.1 it dips as low as the 30's commonly ( and peaks back up at 76 occasionally ).
Some system info you might want:
Hardware: XP3200+, 512MB PC3200, 128MB GeForce4 Ti4200
Software: Win XP Pro (SP1 etc), 56.72 Detonators

I've been experiencing strange fps drops too. The weird thing is, they weren't there in bugfix 1. Even on a map like tc_base, which normally gives me a constant fps of 80+, I get drops to 40 and even 20 in heavy firefights. This should be impossable with my settings and system.
Athlon xp 2200+
1024 mb ram, pc 2700
Geforce Ti 4200 128 mb
Windows xp pro, sp1, 4.25.00.30 detonators (running old version because the used to give me a better fps
)
I don't know if the problem appeared after bugfix 2 or 3, because I never played on a bugfix 2 server. The fact is bugfix 3 gives me bad performance, my avarage fps went down, and it fluctuates more then ever. I will try to get some more detailed fps info soon.

The one with the flags is a real duh screenshot. Same with the snow+smoke+blown gun controls+train+banner picture. And the last dynamic lighted screenshot(dyna) on a laggy server is also bound to give you a bad fps.
I made some screenshots myself, and I also found out the low fps only occures when playing online. Normally, my fps at that point of the map is around 74, on 3.0.1 online(not sure which bugfix, if any) it drops to 40. Made some screenshots on 2.0.7 and 2.0.5 servers too.
On etpro 2.0.5: 63.9 fps, on a laggy server:

On etpro 2.0.7 74.2 fps:

On etpro 3.0.1 local: 74.2 fps:

On etpro 3.0.1 online 41.8 fps:

V6.Sven, does it matter how many players are connected when you get bad fps? or just only difference from offline and online?
you say testbugfix1 doesn't have these fps drops but testbugfix2 and 3 do? can you get screenshots of online play with testbugfix1 then?
whats "etpro 3.0.1 local mean"? demo playback?

It seems the fps gets worse when more people are on the server:
Telenet server, 2 players, 75.2 fps:
![Image](http://members.lycos.nl/clannerts/3012on.jpg)
Telenet server, 10 players, 52.9 fps (and fastsky turned on...didn't know that :/):
![Image](http://members.lycos.nl/clannerts/30110on.jpg)
I also noticed that when a player is in my view on this specific point of oasis, my fps drops by 5. I hope this effect doesn't multiply when more players are on my screen(would explain the choppyness when in a heavy firefight, but the idea is scary
)
[edit]
On quaketheism server, 1 player, 66.1 fps:
![Image](http://members.lycos.nl/clannerts/301qs1p.jpg)
Still not as good as a local empthy server. Even the online telenet 2 persons on screenshot shows a better fps![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)
I've also tried turning down my graphics, but there is no fps gain at all. Switching to 800x600(old: 1152x864), 16 bit depth buffer(old: 32), and billinear filtering, gave me an fps of 65/66. 640x480, with the above setting, had the same effect. Setting the quality to "fastest" gave me 66.7 fps. A pretty insignificant advantage. :/

dunno if it's your case but... maybe you lowered your client rate? I mean: most of the times you have these problems when you've got a too small client rate. unfortunately et needs more and more bandwidth especially when more people are connected and *especially* when there are explosions and some pp firing. It should just make pp warp but it decreases even your fps. Maybe it's not your case but it's better to point it out.
My rate is set to the maximum 25000. Today I even tried lowering the bandwidth et is allowed to use with Netlimiter(max 2 kb/s, in stead of unlimted, which makes it float around 3 kb/s), and it seems to reduce(Neith wrote:dunno if it's your case but... maybe you lowered your client rate?

Using the new icq 4 or whatever its called, i can get repeatable fps loss.
Whenever a message window is open, and someone sends you a new message (its flashing in the taskbar), fps will constantly drop and come back up again. Using etmin to close this window instantly fixes it (or just read the messatge to stop it flashing, but they will probably message you back).
Messages flashing in the taskbar dont cause this.
I wasnt going to report this as an etpro bug but i noticed this thread so i thought i would contribute.

how about disabling/removing netlimiter totally? the et engine has its own rate control and likely netlimiter interferes with it.V6.Sven wrote:My rate is set to the maximum 25000. I haven't got the slightest clue what to think of this.
