a 2000+ athlon > 2.0Ghz p4 (athlon 2000+ = aprx 1700Mhz)
also a 2400+athlon costs about the same as a 2.0Ghz P4

I like AMD better. If you really wanna get a 64-bit chip, wait until AMD releases their 64-bit processors. They will have 32-bit compatibility, so you can run your 64-bit programs AND your 32-bit programs (RtCW included) at the same time. Much neato.

the intel xeon is a great sturdy processor, good choise for games like doom3 and such... but for most software it's not compatible being it's 64bit only

Many people use AMD because its performance usually meets or beats Intel's performance, plus it can cost much less. But, as always, I recommend you look at hardware reviews to judge which chip will suit you. I guess it all comes down to personal preference, need, and money you are willing to spend.

*EDIT*
I took a little look at www.pricewatch.com. An AMD Athlon XP 3200+ running at 2.2 GHz is priced at around $450. Meanwhile, an Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz is priced around $670. Both chips run at about the same speed, regardless of the GHz rating. But, this is why many people choose AMD. The XP 3200+ is $220 cheaper then the equivalent Intel version. Of course, both prices are jacked up sky-high, as an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ is around $250 while an Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz is $393. About 200 MHz difference, but look at the price range. Drops almost in half. Don't always go for the fastest. No way I would buy the 3200+/3.2 GHz when I can get a 3000+/3.0 GHz for half price.

I hope any of this can help you make a decission.

64bit athlons (opteron) are already out.

clawhammer, the consumer 64bit version will be out this fall.

wont help much without 64bit software though, at the moment that means linux only.

32bit mode performs just average -- if youre running 32bit software only then youre much better off with athlon xp.
